Article: Why we cut after you order

Why we cut after you order

Nothing in our studio is cut until an order comes in. It is the reason a set takes five to seven working days to reach you, and the reason we can offer the range we do.

A label that cuts in advance has to guess. It guesses how many mediums, how many larges, how many of a colour will sell, and it guesses months ahead. Whatever it guesses wrong sits in a warehouse until it is discounted or written off. That guess is why most brands stop at six sizes and one or two colourways per style. Every extra option multiplies the cost of being wrong.

We do not guess, so we do not have to protect ourselves from being wrong. Our sizes run XXS to 5XL. The top and the bottom of every co-ord are chosen separately, so a set is two sizes rather than one compromise. Cut to stock, that grid would be sixty-four combinations of dead inventory for a single style. Cut to order, it is sixty-four combinations we can make, one at a time, after you have told us which one you want.

It changes the cloth too. Cotton poplin, chambray, denim, tweed: we buy fabric we like rather than fabric chosen to survive a season in storage, and we cut it as it is needed.

The cost is time. Five to seven working days is not next-day delivery and we will not pretend otherwise. What those days buy is a garment that existed for the first time because you asked for it, in the two sizes that fit you, made by a small team cutting one set at a time.

If a size still turns out wrong, one exchange is free, with a prepaid pickup, within seven days of delivery. We would rather remake it than have it sit unworn.
